New Delhi: After US President Donald Trump's decision to impose heavy tariffs on India, he is facing sharp criticism in his own country. The former US National Security Advisor (NSA) and many senior bureaucrats have called this policy of Trump harmful for India-US relations.
Under the leadership of US Congress members Deborah Ross and Ro Khanna, 19 MPs have sent a letter to Trump appealing for immediate improvement in deteriorating relations with India. He also demanded the Trump administration withdraw the tariffs imposed on India.
In the letter, the MPs said that in August 2025, the Trump administration had imposed a total duty of up to 50% on products coming from India. This included a 25% reciprocal tariff and a 25% additional duty (in response to oil purchases from Russia).

According to MPs, this policy is causing economic loss to both countries, especially American consumers and Indian producers.
In the letter, the MPs wrote that due to this tariff, the supply chain of American companies has been affected. The cost of resources and products that companies depend on from India is now rising, and it has become difficult to compete in the market.

The lawmakers also stressed that India is not only the largest democracy but is also a major partner of the US in semiconductors, healthcare, energy, and other sectors.

American companies investing in India get access to a rapidly growing consumer market, and investments by India have also created jobs for Americans.
In the letter, the MPs warned that such tariff policies could move India away from America and closer to China and Russia.
He said that considering India's role in an organization like QUAD, this situation could also be worrying for the stability of the Indo-Pacific region.
