India Rejects Mediation Claims
New Delhi: Former US President Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for preventing a potential war between India and Pakistan, stating that his administration’s tariff policies played a decisive role in diffusing tensions during India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ earlier this year.
Speaking at an event on Tuesday, Trump said, “If I didn’t have the power of tariffs, you would have at least four of the seven wars raging. I use tariffs to stop wars.” He insisted that his trade strategy had proven successful, both economically and diplomatically.

Referring to the brief India-Pakistan conflict, Trump claimed that his intervention, tied to trade measures, helped “stop” a dangerous escalation between the two nuclear powers.
“If you look at India and Pakistan, they were ready to go at it. Seven planes were shot down. They were ready to go at it. And then nuclear powers. And I don’t want to say exactly what I said, but what I said was very effective. They stopped,” he said.
He added, “…And that was based on tariffs. It was based on trade.”
Trump links his tariff policy to peace
Trump has previously asserted that his diplomatic and trade pressure on both countries contributed to peace. However, India has consistently denied any foreign mediation, maintaining that the de-escalation was achieved through direct military communication channels between New Delhi and Islamabad.
Defending his economic approach, Trump said tariffs had transformed America’s economy and reinforced its global influence.
“Recently, they said they found billions of dollars, and they couldn’t understand. I said, check the tariff shelf. And they come in the next hour and said, sir, you’re right, it was from the tariffs,” Trump noted.
He further declared, “Tariffs are very important for the United States. We are a peacekeeper because of tariffs. Not only do we make hundreds of billions of dollars, but we’re a peacekeeper because of tariffs.”

India’s Operation Sindoor was launched in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 tourists. The operation targeted terrorist bases across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The short-lived conflict saw intense military exchanges before both sides agreed to a ceasefire.
