New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has sharply warned Canada against deepening economic relations with China, threatening to impose 100 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods entering the United States if such ties continue. In a strongly worded post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump targeted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, repeatedly referring to him as “Governor,” a term often used by Trump to mock Canada’s sovereignty.

Trump accused Canada of attempting to act as a “drop-off port” for Chinese goods that could eventually enter the US market. He made it clear that Washington would not tolerate what it views as an indirect pathway for Chinese exports into the United States.

China Poses an Existential Risk to Canada, Claims Trump

In his remarks, Trump warned that closer ties with Beijing would be disastrous for Canada. He claimed China would “eat Canada alive,” destroying its businesses, social fabric, and traditional way of life. According to Trump, any trade or investment deal between Canada and China would trigger an immediate and sweeping trade retaliation from the US.

Trump framed the issue not merely as a trade dispute, but as a matter of national and economic security, arguing that China’s influence could fundamentally reshape Canada in damaging ways.

The US President also linked the trade threat to Canada’s opposition to the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system over Greenland. Trump claimed the system would enhance regional security and protect Canada as well, accusing Ottawa of rejecting the plan while simultaneously choosing to strengthen economic ties with China.

He criticised Canada for what he described as contradictory behaviour—opposing US-led defence initiatives while seeking closer cooperation with Beijing, which he portrayed as a strategic rival.

Carney’s China Visit Sparks Diplomatic Tensions

Trump’s comments followed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing, the first by a Canadian leader in nearly ten years. During the trip, Carney sought to revive economic engagement with China, Canada’s second-largest trading partner after the US.

The visit resulted in agreements to reduce tariffs on certain Canadian agricultural exports, introduce quotas on Chinese electric vehicles, and explore the possibility of increased Chinese investment in Canada. Chinese President Xi Jinping described the talks as a “turnaround” in bilateral relations, reflecting a shifting global economic landscape.

Carney Criticises US Tariff Policies

During an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Carney openly criticised US tariff policies, suggesting that traditional global trade rules no longer offer adequate protection. He described Canada’s recent negotiations with China as more “predictable,” calling discussions with Beijing “realistic and respectful,” a comment widely seen as a pointed contrast to dealings with Washington.

Rising Trade and Geopolitical Tensions

Trump’s warnings highlight growing tensions between the US and Canada at a time when global trade alliances are under strain. With Canada seeking to diversify its economic partnerships and the US taking a hardline stance on China, the episode underscores the deepening divide over trade, security, and geopolitical influence in North America.
