Vice-Presidential Polls: Voting underway at Parliament House; PM Modi casts 1st vote

New Delhi: The voting for the Vice-Presidential elections began this morning at 10 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi casting 1st vote. The voting will be closed at 5 in the evening followed by counting of votes at 6. Soon after the result will declare, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The ruling NDA pick senior BJP leader and former Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan faces Opposition nominee former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy in a direct contest.

CP Radhakrishnan belongs to Tamil Nadu and B Sudershan Reddy comes from Telangana.

The V-P poll is necessitated due to the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on 21 July.

NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan has a clear edge over Opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal and Kiren Rijiju, Waynad MP Priyanka Gandhi were among the early voters. Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Harivansh, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut and SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav were among others who came to cast their vote.

As the V-P election which takes place under a secret ballot system, Members of Parliament are not bound by party whips.

Electoral College

The Vice-President is elected by an Electoral college which comprises of elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and elected members of the Lok Sabha.

Election Process

Secret Ballot: The voting is conducted via a secret ballot to ensure privacy.

Proportional Representation: The election uses the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.

V-P Salary And Perks

Vice-President salary and allowances are regulated under the Salaries and Allowances of Officers of Parliament Act, 1953.

According to the Act, there is no provision for a regular salary for the Vice-President.

A Rajya Sabha Official said, "There is no provision for a specific salary for the Vice-President; instead, they receive remuneration and benefits commensurate with their role as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha."

The Rajya Sabha Chairman gets a salary of Rs 4 lakh per month. Besides the Vice-President enjoys several perks and allowances including free accommodation, medical care, train and air travel, a landline connection, mobile phone service, personal security and staff.
