Severe winter conditions continue across north India as dense fog, cold wave and frost disrupt daily life. Several regions reported near-zero visibility, while IMD forecasts snowfall and rain due to an active western disturbance in coming days.
North India Shivers Under Freezing Winds and Zero Visibility Fog
New Delhi: Severe winter conditions continued across large parts of India on Wednesday, January 14, as dense to very dense fog blanketed several northern states, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Extremely low visibility affected daily life across Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, western Uttar Pradesh, and isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh. Road, rail and flight operations were badly disrupted during early morning hours.

Several locations witnessed dangerously low visibility levels. Amritsar, Ambala, Pantnagar and Udhampur recorded zero-metre visibility, while cities such as Ludhiana, Hisar, Karnal and Bhiwani reported visibility below 20 metres.
Dense fog was also observed in isolated parts of Odisha, with Rourkela recording visibility of nearly 100 metres, further highlighting the widespread impact of the weather system.
Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions prevailed across many parts of Punjab and Haryana, along with some areas of Himachal Pradesh. Isolated pockets of Uttarakhand experienced cold day conditions along with ground frost.
Severe Cold Grips India as Temperatures Plunge Across Hills and Plains
Minimum temperatures dropped below freezing in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, while parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh recorded minimum temperatures between 1°C and 5°C. Temperatures remained 3°C to 6°C below normal across north and northwest India.
The IMD stated that an active western disturbance remains over Himachal Pradesh, supported by upper air cyclonic circulation and strong subtropical westerly jet winds. Another western disturbance is expected to affect the western Himalayan region from the night of January 15.
Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall and snowfall is likely in Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between January 16 and 19.

The weather department has warned that dense fog and cold wave conditions are expected to continue over several northern states in the coming days. Isolated rainfall may also occur in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and western Uttar Pradesh on January 18 and 19, further intensifying winter conditions.
