New Delhi: India is witnessing one of the most intense phases of the monsoon season, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that monsoon activity will remain strong over northwestern and northeastern parts of the country for the next four to five days.

At least 13 states face the threat of heavy to very heavy rainfall. The possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 kmph has further heightened concerns. Authorities have been placed on alert due to the risk of landslides in hilly regions and severe waterlogging in low-lying and urban areas.

Heavy Rain Alert in 13 States

The IMD has issued rainfall warnings for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal due to rough weather, strong winds and high waves.

Red Alert for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

The coming days are expected to be particularly critical for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. A red alert has been issued for parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh amid forecasts of torrential rain.

Heavy showers are also likely in Lucknow, Kanpur and Gorakhpur, as well as western Uttar Pradesh cities including Noida, Ghaziabad and Meerut. In Bihar, widespread rainfall is expected in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya and several other districts until July 26.

Delhi-NCR may experience light to moderate rain accompanied by winds of up to 50 kmph, raising the possibility of waterlogging. Thunderstorms are also expected to continue across several districts of Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur.

Landslide Threat in the Hills

The situation remains more concerning in the Himalayan states. Heavy rainfall is forecast in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand until July 26, increasing the risk of landslides and road blockages.

Jammu and Kashmir areas including Srinagar, Jammu, Anantnag and Doda have also been warned of very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.
