New Delhi: India on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that the temporary pause in hostilities will lead to a broader and lasting peace in West Asia.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated India’s consistent position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective ways to resolve conflicts. The government stressed the need for immediate de-escalation to prevent further instability in the region.
India underlined that the ongoing tensions have caused significant humanitarian distress and disrupted key global systems. The conflict has affected energy supplies and trade routes, creating ripple effects across international markets.

Officials noted that prolonged instability in the region could further strain economies already dealing with volatile fuel prices and supply uncertainties.
A key concern for India remains the smooth functioning of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most crucial oil transit routes.
The government emphasised the importance of ensuring “unimpeded freedom of navigation” and maintaining the steady flow of global commerce through the narrow passage. Any disruption in this corridor has immediate consequences for energy-importing nations like India.
The statement follows a two-week ceasefire agreement announced by Donald Trump, who confirmed the suspension of military actions against Iran. The decision came after diplomatic engagements and the receipt of a proposed framework from Tehran aimed at initiating long-term peace negotiations.

According to the announcement, the truce is conditional on the safe and complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal is expected to serve as a foundation for further discussions toward a permanent resolution.
India has consistently maintained that stability in West Asia is vital not only for regional security but also for global economic balance. The latest statement reinforces New Delhi’s position that sustained diplomatic engagement is the only viable path forward.
As the ceasefire takes effect, India’s focus remains on ensuring that the fragile peace holds and that critical trade and energy routes remain secure.
