New Delhi: US President Donald Trump decided to impose an additional 25% tariff on India for Russian oil imports.
After this, a total of 50 percent tariff has been imposed on Indian goods. After the US tariff announcement, India's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that in recent times, the US has targeted India's oil imports from Russia.
The government has said that we have already clarified our stand on these issues. These include the fact that our imports are based on market conditions. Its purpose is to ensure energy security of India's 1.4 billion population. India termed this decision as unfortunate and irrational. PM Narendra Modi also clearly said that India will not compromise with its interests on the issue of tariff.
Apart from India, China is also a big trading partner of Russia. China imports almost twice as much Russian oil as India. Still, the US has given China a 90-day extension. We will also understand the reason for this, first let us understand what loss India may have to suffer due to tariff.
How big is the loss expected for India due to tariff?
Some experts believe that India is not going to suffer any major loss due to the announcement of 50% tariff imposed by the US on India. 95% of India's exports are not expected to be affected by US tariff. According to experts, India's total exports in the financial year 2024-25 were $ 820 billion. In which the part affected due to tariff is only 4.8%. This means that only about $ 40 billion of Indian exports can be affected by US tariff. There is no possibility of any impact on the remaining $ 780 billion of Indian exports at the moment. According to experts, electronics, pharma, auto parts, metals and service sectors are not expected to be affected by tariff at the moment.
China is also buying oil from Russia, yet America is soft, know why
According to the United States Trade Representative (USTR), in 2024, the trade in goods and services between the US and China was about $658.9 billion. Of this, US exports to China were $143.54 billion, and US imports from China were $462.63 billion.
According to government data, the US remained India's largest trading partner for the fourth consecutive year in 2024-25, with bilateral trade at $131.84 billion. From these figures, it can be understood that large-scale trade is taking place between the US and China. China is also a big trading partner of India.
China remained India's second largest trading partner in 2024-25 with two-way commerce of $127.7 billion.
This shows that America's trade is much more with China and to some extent they are dependent on China. Because of this, America is ignoring China regarding Russian oil imports. America does not want to spoil its trade relations with China.
Why is Trump using tariffs as a weapon in global trade?
America has considered India as its strategic partner in countering China from the very beginning. But now it is not just a matter of geopolitical reasons, the economic angle has also been included in it. Trump is using tariffs as a weapon to get his point across. The deepening energy relations between India and Russia are appearing more important than its role in America's Indo-Pacific strategy.
Why is Trump having a problem with the relationship between India and Russia?
These tariffs are clearly linked to India's growing trade with Russia. India imports more than 85 percent of its crude oil needs. More than one-third of this oil comes from Russia. India bought about 1.8 million barrels of Russian crude oil every day in the year 2024, which is about 37 percent of Russia's total oil exports.
Why did India decide to buy oil from Russia?
During the Russia-Ukraine war in the year 2022, many countries imposed sanctions on Russia, due to which the price of crude oil reached $ 137 / barrel. At that time, India had created a balance between demand and supply at the global level by buying oil from Russia in maximum quantity, due to which the prices could not go up much. This was a strategic step taken by India. According to Trump, this step of India was not fair. However, India made it clear that it is baseless to target only India by ignoring other countries. India alleged that the US and its allies continue to trade goods like uranium and palladium with Russia.
Is Trump trying to force India away from Russia?
This trade war is not just limited to oil. India's defense relations with Russia are an important, long-term pillar of its foreign policy. More than 60% of its military equipment is obtained from Moscow. This dependence makes Russia an important strategic partner for India. The Trump administration's tariffs are widely seen as an attempt at "geopolitical pressure". An attempt is being made to force India to choose between continuing its relationship with long-term ally Russia or its relationship with the US.
How did the deterioration of India-US relations begin?
In the last four-five months, Trump has given many shocks to the whole world. It started in February, when Donald Trump imposed heavy tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China. Till then India was relaxed but Trump had warned that further tariffs would be imposed.
