Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday launched a sharp attack on rebel leaders within the party, asserting that the organisation was “better off” without those who had allegedly turned against it.

Her remarks came hours after the TMC expelled two MLAs over alleged anti-party activities amid growing reports of internal discord following the party’s recent electoral setback in West Bengal.

Mamata Defends Party Workers

Addressing party workers, Mamata said the TMC belonged to its grassroots workers rather than individual leaders. “There may be some people who take advantage of situations, but those who thought such people were their assets have left, and we are better off without them,” she said.

The TMC supremo claimed that some leaders who had enjoyed power for years were now allegedly attempting to align themselves with rival political forces after the party’s defeat. She maintained that the TMC would emerge stronger despite the ongoing political challenges.

Attack on BJP and Bengal Government

Mamata also intensified her criticism of the BJP-led West Bengal government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. She alleged that TMC workers were facing intimidation and that party offices were being vandalised in different parts of the state.

Claiming that democratic norms were under threat, Mamata said the current political atmosphere reflected “complete lawlessness” and compared the situation to authoritarian rule. “You cannot weaken TMC by intimidating or bribing a few MLAs and MPs,” she said, adding that such actions would only strengthen the party further.

Remarks on Abhishek Banerjee Incident

The former chief minister also referred to the alleged attack on TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, describing the incident as “shocking”. She accused authorities and hospitals of failing to provide proper treatment and alleged misuse of power by the ruling establishment.

The TMC has accused BJP supporters of involvement in recent attacks on party leaders, though no official confirmation has been issued regarding those allegations.

Call for Student Protests Over NEET

During her speech, Mamata also raised concerns over alleged discrepancies in the NEET examination process and urged students to protest peacefully. She described students as the “backbone of society” and said their voices should be heard on issues related to examination irregularities.

The TMC is currently facing one of its most challenging political phases in recent years, with internal tensions and leadership disputes surfacing after the assembly election results.
