New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal on Friday celebrated the strong performance of the Aam Aadmi Party in the Punjab civic body elections and launched a sharp political attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party after the ruling party secured a dominant lead across urban local bodies.

Reacting to the results, Kejriwal thanked the people of Punjab for what he described as a “historic victory” and said voters had endorsed the governance model of the Bhagwant Mann government.

Kejriwal Calls BJP ‘ED Party’

In a post on social media platform X, Kejriwal took a direct swipe at the BJP, referring to it as the “ED party.” He accused the party of harassing small traders and business owners in Punjab through enforcement actions and raids.

Kejriwal claimed the election outcome reflected public anger against such actions and said voters had “taken revenge” through the ballot box.

He also stated that the AAP government would continue focusing on development and public welfare initiatives in the state.

AAP Records Massive Lead in Civic Polls

According to the results declared so far, AAP won 862 of the 1,765 wards counted across 102 civic bodies in Punjab. The elections were held for municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats across the state.

The Congress emerged a distant second with 348 seats, while Independent candidates secured 242 wards. The Shiromani Akali Dal won 169 wards, while the BJP managed to secure 138 seats. The Bahujan Samaj Party won six wards.

The elections were conducted using ballot papers on May 26 and recorded a voter turnout of nearly 64 percent.

Bhagwant Mann Hails Public Support

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also welcomed the results and said people had rejected divisive politics in favour of development-oriented governance.

Mann praised voters for participating in large numbers despite the summer heat and said the results reflected public trust in the ruling party’s work. Political observers view the civic body elections as an important indicator ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for early 2027.
