Mumbai: Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has declared a temporary break from active politics after revealing that he is battling a “serious health issue.” In a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), Raut told his supporters that he has been advised by doctors not to step out or mingle publicly.

“You all have loved and trusted me,” he wrote. “But I have developed serious health issues and am undergoing treatment. I will come out of this.” The 62-year-old leader added that he hopes to return to full health by early next year.

Raut’s announcement comes at a politically charged time in Maharashtra, with several critical local elections on the horizon.

PM Modi Extends Good Wishes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first national leaders to respond. Sharing his message on X, Modi wrote, “Praying for your speedy recovery and good health, Sanjay Raut Ji.”

Raut’s reply, in Hindi, surprised many political observers: “Respected Prime Minister Ji, thank you! My family is grateful to you! Jai Hind! Jai Maharashtra!”

The exchange between the two leaders often on opposite ends of sharp political criticism, stood out for its civility and warmth. Raut, known as one of Modi’s fiercest detractors, has frequently targeted the Prime Minister and the BJP government over various issues.

Health Setback Amid Crucial Elections

Raut’s health-related pause comes just weeks before Maharashtra’s political calendar intensifies. The municipal council elections are expected in mid-November, followed by Zilla Parishad polls in December. The all-important Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections — long dominated by the Shiv Sena are anticipated in early 2025.

Raut has been a chief strategist and media voice for the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction, making his absence particularly significant. The BMC remains not just a political prize but also a symbol of the Sena’s legacy in Mumbai. Without Raut’s firebrand presence, the opposition’s messaging may lose some of its bite.

Over the past few years, Raut has taken sharp positions against the central government. From accusing the BJP of misusing central agencies to questioning Modi’s interactions with the judiciary and stance on China, his remarks have consistently grabbed headlines.

Now, with his health keeping him away from the public eye, his party faces the challenge of sustaining that visibility and energy through other leaders.

Political Calm Before the Storm?

While details of Raut’s illness remain undisclosed, his assurance that he will “come out of this” has offered some comfort to supporters. Party insiders say his family and the Uddhav faction are focusing on his recovery while maintaining campaign momentum.

Raut’s sudden break, coupled with the Prime Minister’s conciliatory gesture, has added a rare moment of pause in Maharashtra’s fiercely competitive political landscape, one that could subtly reshape dynamics as the polls approach.
