Coimbatore Mayor R Ranganayaki inaugurated a summer buttermilk stall in RS Puram, an initiative expected to serve nearly 25,000 people daily for 90 days, offering relief to residents during the intense heat.

Coimbatore: A large-scale buttermilk distribution initiative was inaugurated in Coimbatore on Thursday to help residents cope with the summer heat. The stall was launched at the premises of Rajasthani Sangh in RS Puram by city Mayor R Ranganayaki and Corporation Commissioner Shiv Guru Prabhakaran.
The initiative has been organised by Jagannath Textiles and is expected to provide refreshing buttermilk to around 25,000 people every day for the next 90 days.

During the event, Mayor Ranganayaki praised the organisers for continuing the service for over two decades. She noted that the initiative has been carried out for 21 consecutive years during the summer season.
According to her, buttermilk is distributed daily at multiple locations across the city, benefiting thousands of residents, commuters and workers. At times, distribution vehicles also stop at public places such as government hospitals and railway stations to reach more people.
The mayor appreciated the philanthropic efforts of the organisers and said such initiatives provide significant relief to residents during extreme summer conditions.

The programme was hosted by Jagannath Textiles President Ramesh Tibrewal, who welcomed the guests. Several members of the Rajasthani Sangh leadership and community representatives attended the event and honoured the organisers.
Corporation Commissioner Shiv Guru Prabhakaran also commended the effort and acknowledged its positive impact on the local community.

Speaking at the event, Ramesh Tibrewal said that before the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisation distributed buttermilk on a larger scale for nearly four months each summer. After the pandemic, the duration was reduced to three months.
Currently, around 25,000 to 50,000 people consume buttermilk daily through the initiative. Local residents and workers expressed appreciation for the service, saying it offers welcome relief from the heat.
Several directors and employees of the Jagannath Group, along with community members, were present during the inauguration ceremony.
