New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid an emotional tribute to 10-month-old Aalin Sherin Abraham during the 131st episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat. Calling the loss of a child “an unbearable sorrow,” he praised the infant’s parents for choosing organ donation in the midst of personal tragedy.

Modi said the family’s decision reflected extraordinary courage and highlighted the growing awareness around organ donation in India.

A Tragic Accident in Kerala

Aalin, a native of Mallappally in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, suffered critical injuries in a road accident on February 5 near Pallam in Kottayam. She was travelling with her mother and grandparents when their vehicle was hit by an oncoming car at a junction.

After initial treatment at local hospitals, she was shifted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi for advanced medical care. Despite days of intensive treatment, doctors declared her brain-dead on February 13.

A Decision That Gave Life to Others

Following medical counselling, her parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, consented to donate their daughter’s organs. The decision made Aalin the youngest organ donor in Kerala’s history.

Her liver was allocated to a six-month-old infant undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital. Her kidneys were designated for a child at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College’s SAT Hospital.

Honoured Across the State

Kerala Police accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour to the infant in recognition of her contribution. Union Minister Suresh Gopi and state officials paid their respects during the funeral at St. Thomas CSI Church in Nedungadappally, where many locals gathered to honour the child
