Glasgow: India has opened its medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games even before the opening ceremony, as boxer Lovlina Borgohain after receiving a direct semifinal entry in the women's 75kg category in Glasgow.

The Olympic medallist has secured a place in the women's 75kg semi-finals, guaranteeing the country at least a bronze medal.

This achievement comes as a good news  India as the national contingent prepares to start its campaign in Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Semi-final Berth Guarantees Medal

Assam Boxer competing in the women’s 75kg Category, the top-seeded boxer received a direct bye into the semifinals due to a compact five-athlete draw.  With only five competitors in this women’s category, three boxers, including top-seeded Borgohain, received direct places into the semifinals, while the remaining two face off in a single quarterfinal bout.

She is scheduled to begin her campaign on July 31, when she will face T.K.B.P. Taafaki for a place in the gold medal bout.

Small Draw Benefits Top Seed

The women's 75kg division features only five competitors, resulting in a compact draw. As the top seed, Lovlina was among the athletes who advanced directly to the semifinals, while the remaining contenders compete for the other available spot.

A victory in her semifinal will take the Indian boxer into the gold medal match, while a defeat will still see her return home with a bronze medal.

India Eyes Strong Campaign

India has sent a 126-member contingent to the 2026 Commonwealth Games and will compete across several disciplines, including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, artistic gymnastics, swimming, track cycling and lawn bowls, along with multiple para events.

The athletics competition begins on July 27, with Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra among India's biggest medal contenders. In weightlifting, Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu is expected to lead India's challenge as the country looks to build on its rich Commonwealth Games record.
