England World Cup Squad 2026
London: Thomas Tuchel has confirmed England’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making several high-profile omissions ahead of the tournament in North America.
Among the biggest talking points was the exclusion of Trent Alexander-Arnold, with defensive spots instead handed to Tino Livramento and Djed Spence. Despite an injury-hit season with Manchester City, John Stones retained his place alongside Dan Burn in defence.
The omission of Harry Maguire also drew attention after the defender publicly shared his disappointment at missing the tournament. Luke Shaw, Adam Wharton and Morgan Gibbs-White were among the other notable absentees.
Up front, Ollie Watkins earned a recall after an impressive run with Aston Villa, scoring 10 goals following his earlier omission from an England squad. He joins captain Harry Kane and Ivan Toney in attack, giving England the same central striking options used during UEFA Euro 2024.
Meanwhile, creative players Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Jarrod Bowen failed to make the final cut.
Speaking after announcing the squad, Tuchel admitted the process involved several difficult conversations but said clarity and trust guided his decisions.
The England manager explained that performances, leadership qualities and dressing-room influence played a major role in finalising the squad. He also stressed the importance of maintaining team chemistry heading into the competition.
England have been placed in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
