New Delhi: Preparations have been completed to curb the tricks used by teenagers on the social media platform Instagram. Till now many teenagers have been dodging the policies of the platform by showing fake age or giving wrong information, but now it will not be so easy to do so, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Meta, the company that owns Instagram, will now detect the real age of teenagers with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI), so that minors can get a safe and appropriate experience on the platform.

About The New Update

Meta has said in its new update that it will verify the age of users through AI technology. Till now Instagram only relied on the date of birth entered by the user while creating the account. But now if a user shows that he is 18 years of age or older, AI will check whether this claim is true or not based on his activities, profile details and other signs. If the platform suspects that a teenager has deliberately entered his age wrong, he will have to upload an identity card (ID) to prove his age, or follow Meta's other verification options.

How AI Identify Age

AI will analyze several indicators such as user behavior, content posted on his profile, accounts followed and the way he interacts. Apart from this, in some cases it can also estimate the age of the user by scanning his face. Meta claims that all this will be done keeping in mind the privacy of the user and all the data will be kept confidential.

Why Was This Step Taken?

Meta says that providing a safe environment to teenagers on online platforms is its priority. Many times teenagers hide or exaggerate their age to access inappropriate content, which can cause them mental and emotional harm. Apart from this, there was a repeated demand from child safety organizations and parents that social media companies should take more serious steps regarding age verification.
