WhatsApp is testing a game-changing feature — chat via usernames instead of phone numbers. With added security through a 4-digit key, this move aims to boost user privacy and stop unwanted messages.
Chat Without Sharing Your Phone Number
New Delhi: WhatsApp, the most widely used messaging app worldwide, remains the preferred choice for millions of users in India. Although it has faced some competition from Indian apps like Arattai for some time, WhatsApp continues to strengthen its position by adding new features.
Now, the company is working on a remarkable feature that will further strengthen user privacy. Chatting without a mobile number will now be possible. Until now, sending messages on WhatsApp required a mobile number.

However, this requirement will be eliminated in the near future. According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to connect using their username.
WhatsApp will not only allow chatting using a username but will also include a 4-digit code, also known as a "username key." When you give someone your username for chat, you'll need to provide this code along with it.

This will prevent strangers from messaging you simply by searching your name. This feature will strengthen user privacy and help prevent spam messaging.
WhatsApp is working on another unique feature that will allow users to reserve their favorite or unique usernames. This feature appears to be inspired by platforms like Twitter and Instagram, where users reserve unique names to protect their identities.
Currently, this feature is only available to a select group of users in the WhatsApp Beta program. The company is testing it to gauge user feedback. It's expected that if the testing is successful, this feature will soon be rolled out globally to all users.
WhatsApp has also been working on some AI-based features, call scheduling, and other user-friendly updates. All these features indicate that WhatsApp has become more concerned with user security, convenience, and the privacy of personal information.
