Nitin Nabin files nomination as new BJP President
New Delhi: The political heat within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified ahead of the election for the party’s national president. Incumbent acting president Nitin Nabin has formally filed his nomination for the key position, signalling a decisive move in the leadership contest.
The BJP is set to elect its new national president on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, with all preparations completed at the party headquarters in Delhi. According to party sources, the nomination process took place on Monday between 2 PM and 4 PM, followed by a window for withdrawal of nominations from 5 PM to 6 PM.

After the scrutiny of nominations, the party’s National Election Officer will issue an official statement at 6:30 PM, outlining the next steps in the election process.
Political activity at the party headquarters was at its peak during Nabin’s nomination. Senior leaders, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Nitin Gadkari, were present. Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, such as Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh), Pushkar Singh Dhami (Uttarakhand), and Pramod Sawant (Goa), also traveled to Delhi to publicly support Nitin Nabin.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and several senior BJP leaders from the capital also submitted letters of support, signaling unified backing for Nabin.
Party sources indicate that Nitin Nabin is currently considered the strongest contender for the post. With backing from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders, there is a strong possibility that he could be elected unopposed. If confirmed, Nitin Nabin would become the BJP’s 12th national president and one of the youngest leaders to hold the position.

According to the BJP constitution, the national president is elected by an electoral college comprising members of the National Council and State Councils. Candidates must be supported by at least 20 members from a single state and must have a minimum of 15 years of party membership to be eligible.
If all procedures proceed as scheduled, Nitin Nabin is expected to formally assume leadership of the party on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in BJP’s organizational leadership.
