School timings revised in Uttar Pradesh (Img: Internet)
Lucknow: In response to intensifying heatwave conditions, the Uttar Pradesh government has revised school timings across the state to reduce students’ exposure to extreme temperatures. The decision comes as several regions continue to record rising daytime heat levels.
According to an official directive issued by the Director of Education (Basic), Pratap Singh Baghel, classes will now be conducted from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Teaching and non-teaching staff, however, are required to remain on school premises until 1:30 PM to complete administrative and academic responsibilities.
The revised schedule aims to ensure that students avoid peak afternoon heat, which can pose serious health risks, particularly during prolonged exposure.
As per the new timetable, the school day will begin with a brief morning assembly or yoga session from 7:30 AM to 7:40 AM. Regular classes will follow, with a short mid-day break scheduled between 10:00 AM and 10:15 AM.
Officials have instructed all District Basic Education Officers to ensure strict compliance with the revised timings. At the same time, School Management Committees of recognised institutions have been given limited flexibility to make adjustments based on local weather conditions if required.
The move follows warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has predicted heatwave conditions across multiple parts of the country over the coming days. Regions including northwest, central, and parts of eastern India are expected to experience significantly high temperatures between April 20 and April 25.
States such as Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and others are likely to face severe heat conditions. Additionally, warm night temperatures have also been forecast in certain areas, further adding to discomfort.
Authorities have emphasised that the revised timings are a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding students’ health while ensuring that academic activities continue without disruption. Schools have also been advised to take necessary steps such as ensuring adequate drinking water and minimizing outdoor exposure during school hours.
