Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh electricity consumers are set to see their monthly bills climb by nearly 10% starting June, following a decision by the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to levy an additional surcharge under the fuel adjustment charge mechanism.

The surcharge, to be added on top of regular electricity tariffs, is intended to offset rising fuel and power procurement costs faced by distribution companies. The extra charge will appear separately on bills issued in the upcoming cycle.

Officials emphasized that the fuel adjustment charge allows utilities to pass on fluctuations in fuel expenses and power purchase costs to consumers, ensuring the financial sustainability of electricity distribution operations.

The timing of the hike is drawing criticism, as many areas of the state continue to report power cuts and supply shortages, particularly during the peak summer months when electricity demand is high. Consumer groups have expressed concern over the added financial burden, highlighting that residents are already coping with rising living costs.

The impact of the revised billing structure will vary depending on electricity consumption and tariff category, affecting households, commercial establishments, and other consumers across Uttar Pradesh.

UPPCL has defended the decision, stating it is in line with regulatory provisions. Nevertheless, with the new bills set to be issued from June, residents are likely to feel the pinch of higher electricity charges in the coming weeks.
