New Delhi: The Supreme Court has intervened in the ongoing dispute over the revised definition of the Aravalli hill range, staying its earlier order dated November 20, 2025. The earlier ruling had limited the definition of the Aravallis to hills measuring 100 meters or more in height. The court observed that such a restricted definition could have serious environmental implications and may weaken long-standing safeguards meant to protect the fragile ecosystem of the region.
The apex court has scheduled the next hearing for January 21, 2026, and ordered that all mining activities in the concerned areas remain suspended until then. A bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant, along with Justice J K Maheshwari and Justice Augustine George Masih, issued notices to the central government and the governments of Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Delhi. The court has also directed the formation of a high-powered expert committee to review existing reports and provide clear recommendations before any final decision is taken.
