New Delhi: Employees of Delhi's Rajghat bus depot protest after the sudden closure of the depot on July 16. Due to this closure without any prior notice, many employees have become jobless. The staff, including drivers and mechanics, who have been working for nearly a decade, are angry at this sudden confinement and lack of communication. It was assured by the government that buses will continue to ply, but all operations have stopped and buses are parked in depots.
The workers are demanding three months "salary, bonus and fair compensation. They say that a formal three-month notice is required before closing the depot or removing the employees, which was not given this time. Many workers, who used to commute daily from nearby areas such as Baghpat, are now facing financial crisis and finding it difficult to sustain families and pay rent.
A security observer said the employees worked hard to maintain and enhance the facilities of the depot, but the management ignored their problems. The employees were issued transfer letters, but later did not get jobs anywhere, leaving them trapped in uncertainty.
