IPS Praveen Sood gets one year extension
New Delhi: Senior IPS Praveen Sood gets a one-year extension as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet issued a notification and approved the move to extend his tenure by a year, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
Praveen Sood is a 1986-batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre. He took over as the director of the CBI on May 25, 2023, and his current tenure was going to end on May 24. He is originally from Himachal Pradesh. He has completed his education from IIT-Delhi.
He was to retire in 2024, but was given a two-year term as the director of CBI.
No consensus on the name of the new director
This meeting was held to discuss the name of the new director before the completion of the two-year term of the current CBI director Praveen Sood.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting of the selection committee for the appointment of the next CBI director. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna also attended the meeting at the Prime Minister's Office.
According to sources, after no consensus was reached on the new name, a consensus was reached on extending Sood's term for one year. However, it was also being said that Rahul Gandhi had given a note of disagreement on extending Sood's term.
What are the eligibility criteria
To become the director of CBI, the officer should have at least 30 years of experience in the Indian Police Service or any All India level service. Along with this, the officer should have experience in gathering intelligence or something similar.
At the same time, it is also important that the officer should not have any criminal or corruption case against him, only then he will be eligible for appointment to this post. Praveen Sood is currently working as DGP in Karnataka.
What is CBI
CBI i.e. Central Bureau of Investigation is India's premier investigating agency, which investigates economic crimes, corruption and high-profile criminal cases. CBI has the authority to investigate crimes related to 69 central laws, 18 state acts and 231 crimes in the IPC. It was established in the year 1963 on a proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Currently this agency comes under the Department of Personnel and Pension of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. Let us also tell you that it is not a constitutional body.
