New Delhi: India and Canada have re-established normal diplomatic relations with the reinstatement of high commissioners after almost a year. In this series, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is coming to visit India on October 12. Her visit is being done to strengthen bilateral relations with India and for cooperation on important topics like trade, energy, and security.

Important meetings and conversations

After Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand reaches India on the night of October 12, she will meet Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on October 13.

In these meetings, both the countries will prepare a framework for strategic cooperation in areas like trade expansion, energy transition, and security. Additionally, Anita Anand will also visit Mumbai, where she will discuss investment, job creation, and economic opportunities with Indian and Canadian companies.

Importance of India in Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy

According to the Canadian government, Anita Anand's visit is part of the Indo-Pacific strategy, which includes promoting cooperation with India, Singapore, and China. This strategic cooperation with India is being done keeping in mind Canada's global and regional economic and security priorities.

Bilateral economic cooperation and regional issues

Another Canadian minister, Maninder Sidhu, today spoke to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and expressed confidence in working towards enhancing economic cooperation between Canada and India. They emphasized cooperation in food security, energy transition, supply chain strengthening, and special sectors such as minerals, agriculture, infrastructure, clean technology, and ICT.

Improvement of diplomatic relations: background

There was a period of stagnation in diplomatic relations between India and Canada, especially during the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Relations had become strained due to some obnoxious actions of his government.

But during the G-7 summit in June 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mike Kaine decided to improve mutual relations. After this the High Commissioners were reinstated, which was the first major step after about 11 months.

National Security Advisors meeting

In September 2024, the national security advisors of both the countries, Ajit Doval and Nathalie G. In the Drouin meeting, it was agreed to revive bilateral relations and enhance cooperation. Also, both sides talked about taking steps towards building mutual trust.

Pre-talks of Foreign Ministries

In September, senior officials of the foreign ministries of the two countries held a Pre-Foreign Office Consultation meeting in New Delhi, which included Secretary (East) P. Kumaran from the Indian side and David Morrison, Deputy Foreign Minister from the Canadian side.
