Chandigarh: A 28-year-old social media influencer from Chandigarh, Manjeet Kaur, died during treatment at PGIMER after allegedly being abducted and set on fire in Morinda. She had been undergoing treatment for severe burn injuries for several weeks.
According to the complaint filed by her mother Kanta Devi, two acquaintances allegedly called Manjeet near a liquor shop in Sector 34, Chandigarh, on the night of July 3. She was allegedly forced into a car and taken to Morinda, where she was assaulted, tied to a tree and set on fire.
An acquaintance reportedly spotted Manjeet in flames and helped put out the fire before rushing her to a hospital in Morinda. Due to her critical condition, she was later shifted to a hospital in Mohali and then referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh.
The victim remained unconscious for several weeks before briefly regaining consciousness on August 5. During this period, she reportedly narrated the incident to her family. Despite medical efforts, she died on August 26.
Following her death, Chandigarh Police registered an FIR against two suspects under sections related to kidnapping, murder and joint criminal liability under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police teams are searching for the accused and examining CCTV footage from the route between Sector 34, Chandigarh, and Morinda. Investigators are also questioning family members and acquaintances as part of the probe.
Police officials said Manjeet Kaur was divorced and is survived by her seven-year-old son. Officials also stated that one of the accused was allegedly known to the victim.
The case has sparked concern over the safety of women, with police continuing efforts to trace the suspects and gather evidence.
