Thiruvananthapuram: An infection with brain-eating amoeba kills a 9-year-old girl in Kerala. Kerala is in a state of fear due to the emergence of a serious illness. A 9-year-old girl in the Kozhikode district passed away from amoebic encephalitis.

Kerala health officials have issued an alert following this incident. According to a senior health officer on 13 August the girl was admitted to the hospital due to high fever.
After her health rapidly deteriorated she was moved to Kozhikode Medical College on August 14 2025. She unfortunately died that same day. Amoebic encephalitis was determined to be the cause of death by tests conducted in the medical colleges microbiology lab.
A free-living amoeba that can be found in contaminated water is the source of the infection. This infection is dangerous. It has previously occurred in Kerala. The brain-eating amoeba is another name for it.
The amoeba is a microscopic single-celled organism that inhabits warm freshwater environments such as lakes rivers and hot springs. It thrives in hot water particularly at 46 degrees Celsius and can withstand even hotter temperatures. Through contaminated water typically from swimming or diving the amoeba enters the human body.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the amoeba enters the body through the nose and makes its way to the brain. Following that it gradually erodes brain tissue leading to Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) a fatal infection.
Individuals can become infected not only by swimming in contaminated water but also by using contaminated water to wash their mouths or clear their noses.
