New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has taken tough economic steps against India, including imposing a 25% tariff on Indian imports and a ban on buying arms and oil from Russia.
After this, the US signed an oil trade agreement with Pakistan, which is said to be aimed at developing Pakistan's oil reserves. Trump even called India's economy "dead" because India refused to open its market to American dairy and agricultural products.
Closer relations are being seen between the US and Pakistan at this time. This is confirmed by the fact that in April, the US imposed a 29% tariff on Pakistan, but later it was stopped for 90 days.
The new tariff that has been imposed now is less than that of India. This clearly shows that the US is taking a soft stand towards Pakistan.
Status of Pakistan's oil reserves
Pakistan has very low oil reserves. According to international data, as of 2016, Pakistan had only 353.5 million barrels of oil reserves, which is just 0.021% of the world's total reserves.
Pakistan's daily oil consumption is about 556,000 barrels, while its own production is only 88,262 barrels per day. This means that Pakistan imports 85% of its oil needs from abroad. In such a situation, even the oil deal with the US is not expected to improve Pakistan's situation, as it itself is dependent on imports.
India's oil wealth
India has far more oil reserves than Pakistan. Currently, India has 5.33 million tonnes (about 38 million barrels) of crude oil reserves, which can meet the country's 10-day 'need.
Apart from this, India also has 651.8 million metric tons of recoverable oil reserves. The discovery of new oil reserves in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is likely to further strengthen India's energy security.
India is also ahead of Pakistan in terms of oil production. In February 2025, India produced 600,000 barrels of oil per day, while Pakistan's production was only 68,000 barrels per day. Although India also has to depend on oil imports, its production capacity is much better than Pakistan's.
The US oil deal with Pakistan seems to be a political move, as Pakistan has very little oil reserves and production. On the other hand, India has more resources, but it may face economic challenges due to tension with the US.
