Tehran: Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir travelled to Tehran on Friday as diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran gathered momentum. Reports from Iranian state media indicated that discussions surrounding a possible peace framework between Washington and Tehran had entered an advanced stage.
Munir is expected to hold meetings with senior Iranian leaders, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, during his visit. His trip comes at a time when Pakistan has been actively involved in facilitating dialogue aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East.
According to media reports, Munir’s visit had initially been planned for Thursday but was delayed. Sources indicated that Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who has been in Tehran since Wednesday, had been holding discussions with Iranian officials regarding a possible framework to de-escalate the conflict.
Naqvi reportedly met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi twice within 24 hours to discuss measures aimed at restoring long-term peace and stability in the region.
Pakistan has consistently advocated for a ceasefire between the US and Iran. Reports suggest Islamabad could host another round of negotiations if both sides agree to move forward with the proposed framework.
According to reports carried by Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the draft proposal includes an immediate ceasefire and a commitment from both sides to avoid targeting military or civilian infrastructure.
The framework also emphasises respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. Another key component reportedly includes ensuring uninterrupted navigation through strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

The proposal is also said to include a joint mechanism to oversee implementation of the agreement. In addition, reports suggest the framework could pave the way for a gradual easing of US sanctions on Iran if agreed conditions are met.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged that there had been “slight progress” in negotiations with Iran but maintained that other options remained available if talks failed.
Rubio also rejected any proposal involving a toll system in the Strait of Hormuz, describing such a move as unacceptable.
While no formal agreement has been announced yet, diplomatic activity involving Pakistan, Iran and the US has intensified significantly in recent days.
