Several Indians named in King Charles III’s New Year’s honours list

New Delhi: Several people of Indian origin have been included in British King Charles III’s New Year’s Honours List, recognising their contributions across arts, business, healthcare, and community service. Among the prominent names is Punjabi-origin actress and writer Meera Syal.

The 2026 Honours List includes 1,157 recipients, with 14 per cent coming from ethnic minority backgrounds. The awards will be formally conferred on New Year’s Day 2026.

Meera Syal Honoured for Contributions to Arts and Culture

Sixty-four-year-old Meera Syal, whose parents migrated from Delhi to the United Kingdom, has been recognised for her work in British arts and culture. She is widely known as a writer and actor, especially for starring in the popular British Asian comedy series Goodness Gracious Me.

Professor Meena Upadhyaya Recognised for Medical Genetics and Community Work

Professor Meena Upadhyaya, born in India and formerly a resident of Modinagar in Uttar Pradesh, will also receive an honour. She moved to the UK at the age of 19 and is being recognised for her services to community cohesion and medical genetics in Wales.

Fashion Entrepreneur Mani Kohli Receives Major Honour

Fashion entrepreneur Mani Kohli, founder of Beautiful Collections, has also been named in the honours list. Kohli moved from Delhi to London at 19 and has designed outfits for Bollywood celebrities and royalty, earning international recognition.

  • Neeta Atkar, Senior Independent Director of the British Business Bank Board

  • Harjinder Singh, founder and co-director of Gurmeet Sangeet Academy, a non-profit Sikh musical school
  • Balbir Singh, recognised for establishing the Balbir Singh Dance Academy in Leeds
