Oaxaca: An Interoceanic train derailed on Sunday in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. At least 13 people were killed and 98 injured in the accident. The train was carrying approximately 241 passengers and 9 crew members at the time. The accident occurred on a curve near the town of Nizanda, in a rural area. Rescue and relief teams arrived at the scene immediately after the derailment.
According to the Mexican Navy, 193 passengers are safe, while 98 were injured. Of the injured, 36 were hospitalized in serious condition. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that five of the injured are in critical condition. Local hospitals have been placed on alert for emergencies.

President Sheinbaum stated in a social media post that senior federal officials have arrived at the accident site and are assisting with relief efforts and supporting the families of the deceased. Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara Cruz expressed his condolences for the incident, calling it a tragedy for the state. He said that local authorities and federal agencies are working together to assist the affected families.
The Mexican Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation into the accident. Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos stated on Twitter that the main objective of the investigation is to determine the cause of the accident and identify those responsible.
The Interoceanic Train is a key component of Mexico's ambitious Interoceanic Corridor project. The service was inaugurated in 2023 by then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Its aim is to modernize transportation across the narrow Isthmus of Tehuantepec and improve connectivity between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
