New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his congratulations to To Lam on his election as the President of Vietnam. He expressed optimism about further strengthening bilateral ties under Lam’s leadership.

In a message shared on X, Modi said he looks forward to working closely with the newly elected president to advance cooperation between the two nations.

Focus on Strategic Partnership

Highlighting the depth of relations, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam. He said the long-standing friendship between the two countries would continue to grow stronger.

The partnership, which spans sectors such as defence, trade, and regional cooperation, has been a key pillar of India’s engagement in Southeast Asia.

To Lam’s Election Confirmed

Vietnam’s National Assembly formally confirmed To Lam as president for the 2026–2031 term. The decision saw unanimous backing, with all 495 members present voting in favour of the resolution.

Lam brings significant political experience to the role, having previously served as president for a brief period in 2024. He has also held the influential position of General Secretary of the Communist Party.

Strong Diplomatic Foundations

India and Vietnam share warm and longstanding ties that were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Modi’s visit to Vietnam in 2016. Since then, cooperation has expanded across multiple domains.

The relationship is guided by a joint vision for peace, prosperity, and people-centric development, adopted during a virtual summit between the two nations in 2020.

Growing Cooperation and Milestones

In 2022, India and Vietnam marked 50 years of diplomatic relations, reflecting the steady growth of their partnership. Both countries continue to collaborate closely on regional and global issues.
