Amid tariff tensions between India and the USA, the Trump administration has sent some of his senior officials for a truce with India by having talks over trade deals.
Talks on the trade deal will start again between India and America
New Delhi: The way for talks on a trade deal between India and America is opening once again. A high-level meeting of senior officials of both countries is going to be held in New Delhi on Tuesday, September 16, in which trade-related issues will be discussed. This meeting is taking place at a time when earlier trade relations between the two countries had become tense.
US President Donald Trump has imposed a tariff of up to 50 percent on products coming from India. Initially a 25 percent tariff was imposed, but when India refused to capitulate and kept buying oil from Russia, Donald Trump increased tariffs on India by another 25 percent.
India-US trade talks to resume Tuesday amid tariff dispute
This decision increased the distance between India and America, and the trade talks were stopped. This was the reason why the sixth round of talks on the trade deal between the two countries could not take place.
It is now expected that this new meeting will improve India-US trade relations. Donald Trump's close aide and chief negotiator Brendan Lynch will participate in this meeting from the US side.
On the other hand, from the Indian side, Commerce Ministry's Special Secretary Rajesh Agarwal and Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal will lead this dialogue. Rajesh Agarwal clarified that this is not a formal sixth round but a trade discussion that will prepare the way forward.

At the same time, Sunil Barthwal expressed hope that the talks will move in a positive direction.
Five rounds of talks have taken place between India and the US since March 2025. The first talks took place between 26 and 29 March. After this, Trump announced the increase in tariffs on April 2. This tariff came into effect on April 5, affecting trade relations. Even after the fifth round of talks in July, the tariff was increased, which halted the talks.

The trade relationship between India and the US has seen many ups and downs in recent years. The tariff dispute weakened these relations, but now both the countries are coming back to the negotiating table.
If this dialogue is successful, it can bring a new turn in India-US trade relations and can also move forward towards a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This meeting can prove to be important for the economic future of both countries.
