US President Donald Trump announced plans to permanently block migration from “Third World countries” to the United States. The statement comes after a White House shooting involving an Afghan immigrant. While the term “Third World” historically refers to Cold War-era non-aligned nations, today it loosely represents economically weaker countries.
US May Restrict Migration from Weaker Nations
Washington DC: US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would permanently ban all "third-world countries" from migrating to the US. Trump wrote on his social media platform, "Truth Social," that this step is being taken to protect the American public, domestic tranquility, and control illegal immigration. He stated that his aim is to eliminate federal benefits and subsidies for non-citizens and to expel immigrants who pose a security threat.
This announcement came after two National Guard members were injured in a shooting near the White House. One of the injured died during treatment. Investigators believe the attack was carried out by an Afghan citizen who had come to the US with his family during the Biden administration. Trump strongly advocated for his policy proposal based on this incident.
Donald Trump’s Bold Statement: “Tariffs helped avoid five wars out of eight”
The term "third-world countries" was popular during the Cold War. At that time, US allies were called the First World, countries supporting the Soviet Union were called the Second World, and countries that had no support were called the Third World. India was considered a Third World country at that time. Today, this term is used to describe the socio-economic status of most countries.
There is no official list of "Third World" countries. However, the United Nations (UN) classifies the most economically and socially vulnerable countries as Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Currently, a total of 44 countries are included in the list of LDCs, including Afghanistan.
The UN identifies these countries based on three main criteria:
Per Capita Income
Human Assets Index
Economic and Environmental Vulnerability
For a country to be removed from the LDC list, it must reach a set threshold in at least two of these three criteria.
Donald Trump announces 50% tariff cut on India amid positive trade signals
Although India is rapidly emerging as an economically developed nation, the term "Third World" in Trump's statement is mostly used to describe traditionally or economically weaker countries. Therefore, the likelihood of a direct impact on India is low. However, such an announcement could draw attention to global migration policies and security protocols in the United States.
Trump's statement is a major signal regarding US immigration policy. This policy has been adopted to control illegal immigrants and ensure security. While this could directly impact people in LDC countries like Afghanistan, it does not currently appear to have a direct impact on rapidly developing countries like India.
