Kuwait City: A fresh military confrontation between the United States and Iran unfolded early Thursday after US forces launched strikes in southern Iran, prompting a swift response from Tehran against an American military base in the Gulf region. The escalation marks the most serious breach since the ceasefire agreement reached between the two countries in April.

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that the tensions began shortly after midnight when Iranian naval forces confronted four unidentified ships attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz without prior coordination. According to the report, the vessels ignored repeated warnings from Iranian security forces, leading to warning shots being fired before the ships turned away from the area.

No casualties or damage were reported, and Iranian authorities did not identify the vessels involved.

US Conducts Defensive Operation

A US official, speaking anonymously, said American forces later targeted a ground control station near the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas. The official stated that the operation was launched after Iranian attack drones posed a potential threat to regional security.

According to the official, US Military Strikes intercepted four Iranian drones and destroyed the control station before another drone could be deployed. The strikes were described as “measured” and intended to preserve the fragile ceasefire established earlier this year.

Iranian media later reported explosions east of Bandar Abbas around 1:30 a.m., followed by brief activation of local air defence systems.

Kuwait Drawn Into Escalation

Iran responded several hours later when the Revolutionary Guards reportedly targeted the US military base linked to the earlier strikes. While Iranian officials did not specify the location, Kuwait’s military confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted what it described as an “enemy” aerial attack on Thursday morning.

The latest developments have renewed concerns over stability in the Gulf region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.

The incident also threatens ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a lasting peace agreement between Washington and Tehran.
