Investigation Into Cause of Crash

CENTCOM said the circumstances surrounding the crash are currently under investigation. However, the US military clarified that the aircraft loss was not the result of hostile fire or friendly fire.

Refuelling Aircraft With Long Service History

The aircraft involved was a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, a tanker aircraft used by the US Air Force for mid-air refuelling operations. The aircraft has been in service for decades and is typically operated by a crew that includes a pilot, co-pilot and boom operator responsible for transferring fuel to other aircraft during flight.

Additional crew members may be onboard depending on the mission requirements.
