

Chhaya Purav, a 49-year-old woman from Maharashtra’s Palghar district, died after her ambulance became stuck in a heavy traffic jam on the national highway NH-48 for four hours. The incident occurred when a tree branch fell on her near her home, causing her to be gravely injured. Purav was referred to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, which lacks a trauma center in Palghar. The ambulance, which was carrying her, became trapped in the traffic jam, leaving her in excruciating pain. She was pronounced dead at Orbit Hospital, about 30 km from Hinduja Hospital. Her husband, Kaushik, claimed that if she had arrived at the hospital sooner, her life might have been saved.

Palghar: The passing of Chhaya Purav from Maharashtra's Palghar district has brought attention to the areas poor medical facilities as well as the NH-48 traffic issue. In Madhukar Nagar Palghar Chhaya Purav was gravely hurt when a tree branch fell on her close to her home. She sustained wounds to his shoulders back and head. She was referred to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai by a nearby hospital because Palghar lacks a trauma center.
The average time for this 100-kilometer trip is two to five hours. At approximately 3 pm Purav was put under anesthesia and taken to the hospital. In the ambulance her spouse was seated beside her. The ambulance then became trapped in a huge traffic jam on NH-48. There was no sign of the ambulance. By the way the ambulance had only gone half the way by 6. That is more than three hours later.
As the anesthesias effects subsided Puravs excruciating pain became more intense. At about seven in the morning the ambulance arrived at Orbit Hospital on Mira Road as her condition worsened. About 30 km separated it from Hinduja Hospital. Following examination doctors pronounced her dead.
Doctors pronounced her dead after she was brought to the hospital. Kaushik her husband was informed that if she had arrived at the hospital thirty minutes sooner his life might have been spared. For four hours I watched her writhe in excruciating pain.
Her husband told the media that they did everything they could to save Purab but the traffic jam made it impossible. He claimed that he was having a lot of problems because of the numerous potholes in the road.
She was in pain and crying. She was brought right away to the hospital. But because cars were driving in the wrong direction we were stuck in a traffic jam that got worse.
This tragic event has brought to light the major issues with traffic on National Highway NH-48 and the medical facilities in the Palghar district. Having to pay the price of a life for not receiving timely and appropriate treatment serves as a warning to the family and society at large. To stop such tragedies in the future the relevant authorities must immediately establish a trauma center in Palghar and enhance traffic management.
