Assembly elections may be held early in 5 states
New Delhi: Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur could be held in November-December of this year.
According to Election Commission sources, no formal discussion on this matter has taken place yet; however, the decision regarding election dates will be made with the census schedule in mind. Elections in these five states-including UP-could potentially be held ahead of schedule. It is reported that political parties have already begun making quiet preparations for this.
It is believed that the assembly elections in these states could be conducted in November or December. To avoid any complications with the second phase of the census—proposed for February—the central government is considering holding the elections before February 2027.
The EC will decide when elections in UP and Uttarakhand will take place
According to Election Commission sources, the exact timing of the elections-whether a month before the census or earlier-will be determined during an EC meeting. Government officials are typically assigned duties for both elections and the census; the decision regarding the election schedule will take this into account. The second phase of the census is set to begin nationwide in February, coinciding with the scheduled elections in UP, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur.
Nationwide census scheduled for February
The assembly tenures end on the following dates: Goa (March 14, 2027), Uttar Pradesh (May 22, 2027), Uttarakhand (May 28, 2027), Punjab (March 16, 2027), and Manipur (March 13, 2027). Notably, a toll-free number (1855) has been activated nationwide for the 2027 census; this number can be called to obtain necessary information. Information will be available in both Hindi and English. This announcement was recently made by the office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India.
