Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the upcoming discussions, saying India looks forward to meaningful and positive conversations aimed at strengthening cooperation among member countries.
During his visit, Vladimir Putin is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions are expected to cover several key areas, including trade, investment, energy cooperation, defence, technology, pharmaceuticals and people-to-people relations.
Putin’s visit is significant as it marks his first physical participation at a BRICS summit outside Russia since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2022.
A high-level Russian delegation is accompanying the President during his India visit.
Several world leaders are expected to attend the two-day summit in the national capital.
The participating leaders include Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has also reached India to represent Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is currently focused on domestic election campaigning.
With several international leaders arriving in the national capital, Delhi has been placed under a multi-layered security arrangement.
Around 15,000 security personnel and 200 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed across Delhi. Authorities have installed more than 500 CCTV cameras, including advanced surveillance systems, to monitor important locations.
The Airports Authority of India has also announced airspace restrictions around New Delhi from September 11 to 13. Non-scheduled flight operations will remain restricted between 7 am and 11 pm during the summit period.
The summit comes at a time when global economic and geopolitical equations are rapidly changing. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation among emerging economies, expanding trade partnerships and addressing global challenges through collective efforts.
With major powers participating, the Delhi BRICS Summit is expected to become an important platform for diplomatic engagement and economic discussions.
Nigeria’s Vice-President Senator Kashim Shettima arrived in New Delhi to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit. Minister of State for Defence Shantanu Thakur received the Nigerian leader at the airport.
The visit highlights the longstanding and multifaceted partnership between India and Nigeria, built on strong diplomatic relations, economic cooperation and deep people-to-people connections. Shettima’s participation in the BRICS Summit is expected to further strengthen bilateral engagement and explore new avenues of collaboration between the two nations.
President of the New Development Bank (NDB) Dilma Rousseff on Friday arrived in New Delhi to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit. The New Development Bank, established by BRICS nations in 2015, plays a key role in funding infrastructure and sustainable development projects across developing countries.
Her visit highlights the growing focus on development cooperation, infrastructure financing and sustainable growth among emerging economies.

The BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Joint Statement said members will continue efforts to make cross-border payments work more smoothly and examine the use of local currencies for trade and investment.

Anant Swarup, Secretary General of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), said the forum brought together 2,000 delegates, including 1,100 from India and 900 from other countries. He said businesses were using the event to seek new partnerships.

Delhi Police has detained eight to ten Tibetan nationals from a tunnel near Pragati Maidan on Friday morning according to the police sources.
The detainees had allegedly gathered in the area to protest against the Chinese delegation visiting the national capital for the BRICS Summit 2026, the sources added.

President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, departed for his visit to India to attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Iran’s embassy in India said in a post on X.
External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Friday said that greater economic activity and higher economic security mean greater self-reliance, adding that the objective remains to strengthen the ability to absorb shocks while remaining connected and competitive.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a busy schedule on Friday as the BRICS Summit kicks off in New Delhi. So far, the biggest name to arrive in Delhi on Friday has been Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Russian President will meet PM Modi for a bilateral meeting on Friday.
Apart from Putin, Modi will also meet United Nations (UN) secretary general António Guterres, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
While the Modi-Putin meeting is expected around 3:30pm on Friday, the meeting with Guterres will follow that. Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with the Prime Minister at around 6:15pm, and Subianto is expected to meet Modi an hour later.
Addressing the opening ceremony of BRICS Business Forum, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said, “Technology has always been inseparable from economics and geopolitics. Digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, fintech, and advanced manufacturing all offer major opportunities.
He also added, "But they also raise questions, questions of access, standards, security, and trust. India's chairship has therefore sought to strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem, including through the BRICS incubator network to connect startups and incubators across member countries, complemented by the BRICS Startup Innovation Fund to support innovation-driven entrepreneurship.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal are among those addressing the forum.
Addressing the gathering, BRICS Business Council Chair Jai Shroff highlighted the four key priorities of India’s BRICS chairmanship — Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability — and said they are equally important for governments and businesses.
“India’s BRICS chairmanship under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been built around four priorities: Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability. These are important priorities for the government, but equally relevant for business,” Shroff said.
The Delhi Traffic Police announced major traffic diversions for Friday, September 11, as the national capital hosts global leaders for the BRICS Summit. In an advisory issued on Thursday, the police imposed traffic regulations between 2 pm and 8.30 pm on Friday.
"Commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time, use public transport, especially the Metro, and follow designated diversion routes and instructions from traffic personnel," the traffic police wrote on X, adding that emergency and essential-service vehicles will be given priority passage.
According to a reports, banks in Delhi will remain open on September 11 despite the BRICS Summit-related closure of several government offices.
The RBI’s holiday calendar does not list September 11 as a bank holiday in Delhi, meaning bank branches are expected to operate as usual. However, customers may face traffic restrictions and diversions while travelling to branches due to VVIP movement and summit-related security arrangements.

The national capital is preparing to roll out a cultural red carpet for the visiting spouses and family members of BRICS leaders, with a tight-packed itinerary taking them from India’s political history and modern art to its traditional crafts, even as multiple quick reaction teams (QRTs), Delhi Police companies and ambulances are being deployed to secure their movements.
The programme, planned alongside the three-day Brics summit beginning September 11, will take the visitors to some of the Delhi’s most prominent cultural institutions, including the National Crafts Museum and Hastkala Academy, Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) and Central Cottage Industries Emporium.
Ahead of the summit, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has put in place measures to handle an expected increase in international passenger and flight traffic, including enhanced capacity at Terminal 3, news agency PTI reported.
Dedicated immigration counters will be available for BRICS participants, while arrangements have also been made for the landing and parking of aircraft amid expectations of increased international flight movements during the summit, according to a source.
DIAL said Pier C at Terminal 3 will be progressively operationalised for international flight operations from the night of September 9. International arrivals will be handled through the pier, with both international arrivals and departures planned from the evening of September 10.
