New Delhi: An influential US senator, Bill Hagerty, has claimed that China used a sophisticated "electromagnetic weapon" against India, to met the Indian soldiers along the border during Galwan Clash (not named explicitly). He said the incident, which took place five years ago during the India-China border dispute, could possibly be linked to the Galwan Valley clash.

Reference to Galwan Clash

Bill Hagerty did not directly name the Galwan Valley incident (June 2020), but he said, “There has been a long-standing tension and mistrust between China and India. There was a border dispute between the two countries five years ago, and China used an electromagnetic weapon to literally melt Indian soldiers.”

20 Indian soldiers were martyred in the Galwan clash of 2020. This was the first deadly clash on the India-China border in 45 years, leading to a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries.

China initially confirmed casualties of its soldiers but did not disclose the number. However, according to reports, the number of Chinese soldiers killed could be more than double that of India.

What is the reason for concern in America?

This claim has come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met recently at the SCO Summit (Tianjin). Concerns are being raised in the US about this meeting, especially at a time when there is tension in US-India trade relations.

Former President Donald Trump also recently said that "America lost India to 'Darkest China,'" although he later said that India is an important ally of America.

India-US trade tensions

The Trump administration has imposed a 50% tariff against India, including an additional 25% penalty for buying Russian oil. But last week Trump said he wanted to continue trade talks with India and also said he was looking forward to talking to PM Modi.

I will always be a friend of PM Modi,” Trump said, to which PM Modi replied that he “fully echoes” the sentiment. Bill Hagerty’s allegation that China used a dangerous electromagnetic weapon to harm Indian soldiers is very serious and shocking.

If there is any truth to it, it is not only a violation of human rights, butalso a violation of international law. This statement has come at a time when relations between India and China are slowly improving and the US is closely monitoring this process.
