Severe Fog Disrupts North India
New Delhi: Dense fog continues to blanket most parts of the country, including North India. Extremely low visibility during the morning and night hours is disrupting daily life. Several states in Central and Eastern India are also experiencing increased cold and chill due to the fog. The reduced difference between minimum and maximum temperatures is making the cold feel more intense in the plains.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), visibility was recorded at less than 50 meters in several parts of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Visibility dropped to zero in Amritsar, Agra, Kanpur, and Prayagraj. Dense fog also prevailed in some areas of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and northern Chhattisgarh. Visibility ranged between 50 and 200 meters in many places, affecting road, rail, and air traffic.
Cold wave grips North India; Weather Department issues alerts, 129 flights canceled
The IMD predicts that minimum temperatures in Northwest India may drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next three days. Temperatures in Central India are also likely to fall by about two degrees after the next 24 hours. In Odisha, temperatures were recorded below 10 degrees Celsius in at least nine locations, intensifying the cold.
Light rain and snowfall are expected in the Western Himalayan regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, over the next five days. A thick layer of snow has accumulated on the high peaks. According to the meteorological department, the cold spell will continue in these areas until the new year, and no significant change in weather is expected.
On the second day of Chilla-i-Kalan in Kashmir, light snowfall occurred in the hilly areas. The plains remained cloudy. Due to the snowfall, the Bandipora-Gurez road and the Mughal Road remain closed. The difference between day and night temperatures in Srinagar has decreased significantly, making the cold feel more intense. According to the meteorological department, partly to generally cloudy conditions will prevail in the valley until December 31st.
