New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a significant statement in the Rajya Sabha regarding the ongoing conflict in West Asia (the Middle East) and its impact on India. He asserted that India's primary objective is to restore peace in the region, and to this end, dialogue and diplomacy constitute the most appropriate path.

PM Modi explicitly stated that India has engaged with all parties—Iran, Israel, and the United States—urging them to de-escalate tensions and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He further emphasized that attacks on international waterways and the interception of commercial vessels are completely unacceptable.

What is the impact on India?

The Prime Minister noted that this conflict is impacting the global economy as a whole. India, too, has not remained unaffected. The supply of essential commodities such as petrol, diesel, gas, and fertilizers is being disrupted.

Furthermore, India's trade routes are being affected, leading to difficulties in import and export operations. PM Modi stated that the government's foremost priority is ensuring the safety of Indians residing abroad and safeguarding their livelihoods.

Government’s Preparedness and Strategy

PM Modi gave an assurance that the government is fully prepared to tackle this crisis. In particular, efforts are underway to ensure an adequate supply of fertilizers for farmers so that they face no difficulties during the upcoming sowing season.

He stated that the government is working on short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies to minimize the impact of this crisis on the country. At the same time, he described India's economy as robust.

‘Dialogue is the Only Solution’

The Prime Minister reiterated that the resolution to this entire crisis can only be achieved through dialogue. India has appealed for peace at every level and has condemned attacks targeting civilians and critical infrastructure.

Opposition Expresses Dissatisfaction

Following PM Modi's statement, the Opposition expressed its dissatisfaction. Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, remarked that the prime minister's statement was belated and, in fact, raised more questions than it answered. The opposition was also aggrieved that they were not given the opportunity to ask questions or seek clarifications regarding the PM's statement. Kharge stated that the government should have been better prepared for this energy crisis.

Crisis Described as a Challenge Akin to COVID

PM Modi characterized this situation as a major challenge—comparable to COVID—and asserted that just as the central and state governments worked in tandem during the pandemic, they must similarly join forces to confront this crisis.

Emphasizing the spirit of "Team India," he stated that all states and the Centre must work together to tackle this global crisis.

This crisis in West Asia has emerged as a significant test for India. While the government is prioritizing peace and diplomacy, the opposition is raising questions regarding preparedness and transparency.
