Petwar: Petwar village in Hisar district, Haryana, is witnessing a historic moment today as Justice Surya Kant, the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI), visits his ancestral village for the first time since assuming office in November 2025.
Born on February 10, 1962, in this modest village, Justice Surya Kant completed his early education at the local government school, which lacked even basic facilities like benches. His father, a Sanskrit teacher, inspired him to pursue knowledge, laying the foundation for a remarkable journey from humble beginnings to the country’s highest judicial office.

Today, the villagers are organizing a traditional felicitation ceremony at the very school where Justice Kant studied as a child. The event is expected to see the participation of dignitaries, including the Union Law Minister and the Haryana Chief Minister, alongside hundreds of locals and schoolchildren eager to welcome the CJI.

Justice Surya Kant fondly recalled his childhood memories, from bicycle rides in the village to watching his first film, noting, “Homecoming is for a person who leaves home, but I never left home.”

Before his elevation to the Supreme Court in May 2019, Justice Surya Kant served as the youngest Advocate General of Haryana and later as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. His tenure as CJI, which began on November 24, 2025, will focus on reducing the backlog of pending cases and promoting technology in the judiciary.
