New Delhi: The southwest monsoon has begun strengthening its hold over India, bringing heavy rainfall to Kerala and neighboring regions while dramatic weather changes unfolded in several major cities. At the same time, a powerful storm system swept across Delhi, triggering a sharp fall in temperatures and offering relief from the intense summer heat.
The southwest monsoon entered Kerala on Thursday, marking the beginning of its seasonal journey across the country. Weather officials said conditions remain favorable for the monsoon to advance further into large parts of southern and central India in the coming days.
The rain-bearing system is expected to spread across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and the northeastern states. Meteorologists anticipate the monsoon will cover most parts of the country by the third week of June, although rainfall distribution will continue to be closely monitored.
Delhi witnessed a dramatic shift in weather on Thursday evening after thunderstorms, rain and strong winds swept through the capital. Wind speeds touched 91 kmph in some areas, causing temperatures to plunge rapidly.
Several localities recorded significant cooling. Ayanagar saw the steepest drop, with temperatures falling from 41°C to 22.7°C. Other areas, including Pushp Vihar, Mayur Vihar and Dadri, also reported sharp declines. The weather department briefly upgraded its warning level as thunderstorm activity intensified across the region.
On Friday, Delhi remained under a yellow alert due to the possibility of strong surface winds and unstable weather conditions. Forecasters expect intermittent cloud cover and gusty winds to persist as atmospheric conditions remain favorable for localized weather activity.
Mumbai and several adjoining districts were placed under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning. In Kerala, most districts remained under orange alerts, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall as the newly arrived monsoon continued to strengthen.
Indore has also experienced a rare spell of cool weather. Pre-monsoon showers and strong winds pushed the minimum temperature down to 18.6°C, making it the city's coldest June night in six years. Several districts across Madhya Pradesh remain on alert for thunderstorms and gusty winds.
