The total capital expenditure in the defense budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 was approximately ₹1.80 lakh crore. According to the Ministry of Defense, approximately ₹93,000 crore (₹92,211 crore) has been spent as of September.

This expenditure is primarily intended to ensure the timely supply of critical military items such as aircraft, warships, submarines, and weapon systems.

The Importance and Impact of Capital Expenditure

Capital expenditure in the defense budget is used for the acquisition of new assets, research and development, and infrastructure development in border areas.

This expenditure plays a vital role in strengthening national security, as well as economic growth and job creation. This fiscal year, most of the expenditure was on aircraft and their engines, while significant amounts were also spent on the Army, electronic warfare equipment, armaments, and missiles.

In the previous fiscal year, the Ministry of Defense spent approximately ₹1.60 lakh crore under capital expenditure, which was less than this year. This year's budget allocation has increased by 12.66 percent, indicating further investment in the defense sector compared to last year.

Continuous Increase in Military Expenditure

The military's capital expenditure has seen an increase of approximately 60 percent over the last five years. This increase has been made to meet the need for the purchase of modern weapons and equipment, the development of new technologies, and the upgrade of existing weapon systems.

Preparations for Revision of Budgetary Estimates

The Ministry of Defense is currently working on budgetary estimates and will likely discuss revised budgetary estimates for capital expenditures in the future. This step is being taken to address rising expenditures and new requirements to further strengthen the country's security.

India's defense budget in 2025-26 is being spent more actively and rapidly than ever before. Following Operation Sindoor, this demonstrates India's strategic steps to enhance its military strength and modernization.
