J&K: Heavy rain triggers flood-like situation; Rail, roads affected and school closed

Srinagar: Heavy rains relantless to wreak havoc in Jammu and Kashmir, causing flood-like situations in several areas including Srinagar. So far 34 devotees have killed in the landslide that occurred on Tuesday at Ardhkuwari on the pilgrimage route of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi. Many people have also been injured and rescue operations are still on to save those trapped under the debris.

There has been heavy damage from Katkare to Doda, many bridges have been broken and power wires and mobile towers have been damaged.

3000 Evacuated

Due to floods and waterlogging, about three thousand people have been evacuated to safer places so far. Helicopters are also being used in rescue operations. Vaishno Devi Yatra remained suspended for the second day due to security reasons. Jhelum river is flowing above the danger mark in Srinagar and Anantnag, due to which flood warning has been issued in many areas. Police evacuated people from affected areas to safer places. Judges used boats to continue judicial work amid floods in Anantnag. SDRF rescued 22 people stranded in Lidder river.

Trains Cancel or Diverted

Many trains going from Jammu to Pathankot have been canceled or diverted due to land subsidence on Chakki Bridge of Patakhot. 18 trains are being run through other routes. Traffic is also disrupted on Jammu-Pathankot highway. Ten houses were damaged due to cloudburst in Pader area of ​​Kishtwar. A gateman was rescued by helicopter after the Lakhanpur Madhopur barrage broke down. A CRPF camp was washed away, from where 25 people were rescued.

According to the Meteorological Center Srinagar, there is a possibility of rain in Jammu division and some areas of South Kashmir between 28 and 29 August. Heavy rains may occur in Jammu division between 30 August and 1 September. The weather will remain changeable from 2 to 5 September as well. All educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed on 28 August due to bad weather.
