Dispur: Torrential rains have wreaked havoc in the states of Northeast. So far 25 people have died due to floods and landslides caused by continuous rains for the last two days, while dozens have been injured, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur have been worst affected.
The administration in these states is engaged in relief and rescue work, while the Meteorological Department has issued a warning of more rain in the coming days.
A major landslide incident took place in Assam's capital Guwahati on Thursday, in which five people died. The dead include three members of the same family. According to the local administration, the soil of the hilly areas had weakened due to continuous rain, due to which a large piece of land slid and fell on the houses.
Besides, two people died in Golaghat district and one in Lakhimpur district due to drowning in the floods. The state government has set up relief camps in the affected areas and people are being taken to safer places.
The situation is even more dire in Arunachal Pradesh. Here a vehicle was swept away in the flood waters, killing seven people in it. In another incident, two people died due to drowning. In this way, the total number of deaths in the state has gone up to nine. The administration has started the process of evacuating the riverside areas.
A total of eight people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in Tripura and Meghalaya. Many villages in Tripura are flooded and villagers are being taken to safer places through boats. Waterlogging has also affected life in Shillong and surrounding areas of Meghalaya
Continuous rain for three days in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, has badly affected the city. Roads have been closed due to waterlogging and power supply is also disrupted. The administration has issued a high alert in the areas along the Imphal river and appealed to the people to move to safer places.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for many districts of Assam. At the same time, orange and yellow alerts have been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur. The Meteorological Department has predicted that heavy to very heavy rains may continue for the next 3 to 4 days.
NDRF teams have been deployed in all the affected states. Rescue work is being intensified with the help of the army and local administration. Relief material is being delivered with the help of helicopters at many places. The administration has appealed to the people to avoid rumors and follow the instructions of local authorities.
