New Delhi: The country is today on Friday paying tribute to Swami Vivekanand, spiritual leader, philosopher and thinker, and founder of Ramakrishna Mission on his 123rd death anniversary, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while paying tribute to Swami Vivekananda, wrote on the social media platform 'X':
"I bow to Swami Vivekananda ji on his death anniversary. His thoughts and his vision are guiding for our society. He awakened a sense of pride and self-confidence about our history and cultural heritage. He also emphasized on following the path of service and compassion. "

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 in Kolkata and brethed his last on 4 July 1902.
He is fondly remembered for his 'immortal' address at the World Parliament of Religions held in Chicago, America in 1893, where he sincerely and strongly presented India's culture and tradition strongly to the world.

consider him as their ideal. That is why his birthday on 12 January is celebrated as National Youth Day in the country.
The main objective of the National Youth Day is to reawaken and encourage the messages and teachings of Swami Vivekanand.
Who coined the name Vivekanand? The name Vivekanand is the gift of Raja Ajit Singh of Khetri in Rajasthan. In fact his childhood name was Narendranath Dutt. And Swamiji used to write his name as Vividishananda, which means one who wants to know.
When Swamiji asked Ajit Singh as to which name - Narendranath Dutt or Vividishananda - he liked, Ajit Singh said that according to his opinion it should be Vivekanand. From that day Swamiji changed his name to Vivekanand.
It was Raja Ajit Singh of Khetri who had booked Vivekanand's plane ticket from Mumbai to America. Swamiji left for Chicago by ship on 31 May 1893. In the religious conference in Chicago, he wore Rajasthani saaf, choga, kamarbandh. That too was gifted to him by Raja Ajit Singh.

Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 in a Kayastha family of Calcutta. His childhood name was Narendranath Dutt. Swami Vivekananda's father Vishwanath Dutt was a lawyer in Calcutta High Court, and his mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi was a homemaker.
Swami Vivekananda was interested in studies and learning since childhood. After going to school at the age of 8 in 1871, he secured first place in the entrance examination of Presidency College in 1879.
