New Delhi: Sometimes a statement or claim is such that it immediately catches people's attention. Especially when it is related to a serious disease, then the questions in people's mind increase even more. Recently, the Supreme Court ordered to send all the stray dogs of Delhi-NCR to a shelter home. Many animal lovers got angry on this. At the same time, a statement came from Ambika Shukla, sister of BJP MP Maneka Gandhi, on which people got angry.

In fact, Ambika Shukla has created a controversy by calling the rabies virus delicate. She claimed that washing the wound with soap after a dog bite kills the rabies virus. She said that rabies does not spread easily. There are only 54 cases among billions of people in India.

Doctor called the claim wrong

After this statement, pediatrician Dr. Shivranjani Santosh called the claim wrong. Sharing a post on social media, she said that rabies is fatal. She said that it is very important to get vaccinated to avoid rabies. Because this disease can also take life. She appealed to the people to avoid wrong and misleading videos, in which vaccines are administered at the wrong place and in a hurry. The vaccine should always be given with the right needle length, at the right place and slowly.

What to do in case of bite or scratch?

The doctor said that if the child is bitten or scratched by a dog, cat, monkey or any animal, then the wound should be washed immediately with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. After this, the vaccine should be administered. The vaccine should be given in the thigh or shoulder according to the age of the child, not in the hip. Because the vaccine given in the hips is not effective and it may have to be given again.

The reality of washing with soap

He said that it is necessary to wash the wound with soap, because it reduces the amount of virus, but this does not mean that the virus is completely eliminated. Vaccination is necessary.

Antibodies are also necessary
The doctor, while explaining the rules of WHO in his video, said that an injection of antibodies should also be given at the place of bite. And this should be done within seven days of the first vaccine. If there is a bite at multiple places, then the doctor mixes the dose of antibodies in normal saline and applies it on each wound. If the child has already been given anti-rabies vaccine, then there is no need to vaccinate again for three months. If bitten or scratched again after three months, then only two doses of vaccine have to be given, not antibodies.

What is rabies?
Let us tell you that rabies is a fatal viral disease which has a bad effect on the nervous system. After its symptoms appear, it always causes death. This virus is mostly spread by the bite of an infected animal such as a dog. When the virus enters the body, it slowly reaches the brain and spinal cord through the nerves. On reaching there, it damages the brain, due to which the patient either goes into a coma or may die.

When does the danger increase?
If the wound is not cleaned properly and the full vaccine course is not taken, then this danger increases even more. After the symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal, but if PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) is given on time, complete prevention is possible.

How is rabies tested?

  • Saliva test - Giving saliva in a test tube
  • Skin biopsy - A small part of skin is taken from the back of the neck and tested
  • CSF test - Testing by extracting fluid from a needle in the waist
  • Blood test
  • MRI
