Wearable Air Purifiers Gain Demand as Delhi Pollution Surges
New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is often seen wearing a unique wearable air purifier. This locket-like gadget has been a part of his public image for years. In cities like Delhi, where the AQI can exceed 500 in winter, this small device is a topic of much discussion.
There are many types of air purifiers available in the market, but wearable models are designed for outdoor use. These devices are worn around the neck and claim to slightly clean the air around your breathing zone, i.e., your nose and mouth.

These purifiers are typically available on e-commerce platforms in the range of ₹3,000 to ₹4,000. During sales, some models are available for as little as ₹3,399. This means this technology is no longer limited to high-end or expensive gadgets.
These devices feature two main technologies:
This is a small, HEPA-like filter that physically filters airborne particles. HEPA filtration is scientifically proven and is the most reliable technology used in large room air purifiers.
These claim to neutralize particles by releasing charged ions into the air. However, their effectiveness is not considered as strong as HEPA.
A wearable purifier cannot clean the air in an entire room. It can only slightly reduce fine particles in the air around your face. Some research has shown some mild relief, but the effect depends entirely on the quality of the device.

One concern, especially with ionizer-type devices, is that they can produce mild ozone. Ozone is considered harmful to the lungs, especially for asthmatics and children. Therefore, it's important to check that the device's ozone emission is within safe limits when purchasing.
While a wearable air purifier can provide an additional layer of protection against daily pollution, it's never a substitute for a room HEPA purifier.
