Heavy rains and snowfall have brought down temperatures across North India, offering relief from heat. However, floods in Bihar, crop damage in Punjab-Haryana, and blocked roads in hilly regions have caused widespread disruption, prompting urgent response from authorities.
The weather cools due to rain and snowfall
New Delhi: The continuous rains in North India for the last few days and snowfall in the hilly areas have added to the coolness of the weather. While on one hand it has provided relief from the heat, on the other hand it has also created many problems for the farmers and the general public.
The weather has also taken a turn in Delhi and NCR. A drop in temperature was recorded on Tuesday evening due to heavy rain and strong winds. Palam Observatory recorded 41.6 mm of rainfall, and the minimum temperature was 21 degrees Celsius, which is below normal.

Due to continuous rains in Punjab and Haryana, standing crops in the fields are getting spoiled. Especially the paddy crop, which was now ready for harvesting, has fallen due to strong winds and rain.
Wheat and paddy kept in the markets have become wet, due to which there is a possibility of huge loss. In Punjab, the rainfall in the month of October has broken the record of 70 years.
In the last 48 hours, 8.2 mm of rainfall was recorded in Punjab, while in Haryana too the temperature has gone down by 8-10 degrees below normal.
In Kashmir, there is snowfall in the upper areas and rain in the lower areas. The temperature in Gulmarg has gone below zero. However, the weather remained clear and sunny in Jammu.
Western disturbance is causing the change
Rohtang, Shikula, and Baralacha passes of Himachal Pradesh received heavy snowfall, cutting off connectivity to many parts of the Lahaul-Spiti region. About 250 vehicles are stuck on the Manali-Leh road.
The high peaks of Shimla have also received the first snowfall of the season. Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand were covered with snow, and rain in low-lying areas brought down the temperature.

The water level of rivers is rising rapidly in many districts of Bihar. Due to the breach of the embankment of the Dhauns River in Madhubani and Sitamarhi, a flood-like situation has occurred in about 12 villages.
About 1.5 lakh people are affected, and about 20 thousand bighas of crops have been submerged. In Muzaffarpur too, the Bagmati River is in spate, and even schools have been flooded.
